The UK is much bigger than Hong Kong and therefore the places are more stretched out than in Hong Kong. It may not feel as convenient as in Hong Kong, but once you get used to the pace of living in the UK and get to know how to travel around, you will feel right at home.

Commuting in London

The UK is much bigger than Hong Kong and therefore the places are more stretched out than in Hong Kong. It may not feel as convenient as in Hong Kong, but once you get used to the pace of living in the UK and get to know how to travel around, you will feel right at home.

Underground

The London Underground, also called the Tube, is the world’s oldest underground railway. It is also one of the most developed transportation systems with 11 lines and 270 stations used by up to 5 million passengers per day.

There are 6 fare zones in London stretching from the city centre (Zone 1) all the way to the counties of Surrey, Essex, and Hertfordshire outside London (Zone 6) in a concentric manner. Your fare will vary depending on which zones you travel in.

The Oyster card, which is similar to the Octopus card in Hong Kong, is a stored-value contactless smart card which can be used for the tube, buses, railway and some other transportation. You can also buy a 7 Day, Monthly, 3 month, 6 month, odd period or Annual Travelcard season ticket. Citymapper is also highly recommended to help you to compare and choose your travel options.

Bus

The double decker buses in London may remind you the ones in Hong Kong. They are also very convenient and take you to anywhere in the city.

With the bus hopper fare, you can also make a free second bus journey within an hour of paying your first fare. So, for £1.50, you can take two buses within a one-hour window.

Railway

There are also some other railway systems in London:

- Docklands Light Railway (DLR) – runs in East London
- London Overground – connects to the suburbs
- TfL Rail – runs from London Liverpool Street to Shenfield, Essex, from Paddington to Heathrow Airport and Reading (will be renamed Elizabeth Line)
- Tramlink – runs in South London

There are also other railways that can bring you out of London and travel around the UK.

Cycling

As the UK is bigger than Hong Kong and places are more stretched out, getting a bike is another option to consider if there are short-distance travels. It is also a good exercise. Although cycling in the UK may not be as common as in other countries in Europe, it is still a generally bike-friendly country. Some people may also consider scooter, but it is not yet fully legalised in the UK.

Driving

Owning a car is also an option living in the UK. You can exchange your Hong Kong driving licence to a local one on the government website with just a few clicks!
