Chinese calligraphy has a long history, starting from the time of oracle bone inscriptions in the Yin and Shang Dynasties, and it has been going on for thousands of years.  Through the 8-sessions calligraphy course, our members could master the basic skills of Chinese calligraphy, laying the foundation for long-term practice of calligraphy, which could help nourish personal aesthetic sense, improve patience, and cultivate morality. The course also aimed at inheriting this precious traditional culture among overseas Hongkongers.

The basic elements of Chinese calligraphy are dots and lines, and the writing tools include pen, ink, paper, and inkstone. Such simple elements and tools create five styles of fonts: seal script, di, regular script, line, and cursive. Among these five fonts, people use different brushwork techniques to create ever-changing different styles to express their inner feelings. Today, although the writing function of calligraphy is gradually replaced by computers, it has been sublimated into a higher level of visual art. It plays a very important role in the cultural exchanges between countries, and the friendship between people. It is also conducive to personal cultural development, aesthetics sense, moral cultivation,  pressure alleviation and health preservation.

Hong Kong People Association organised this Chinese calligraphy workshop for 8 consecutive weeks. It was taught by the calligraphy master Mr. Yau. In addition to allowing Hong Kongers in the UK to continue the learning of traditional culture, people from local and foreign countries were welcome to participate, as it serves as a medium which facilitates communication between different cultures to achieve social integration.
